The Cities of Dead (The Casquette Girls #3)

Update: *****
I've read it twice and it gets all the stars!!! I LOVE this series.

One of my most anticipated books this year has a cover and I'm very excited to be part of the reveal. So here it is!!!!

THE CITIES OF DEAD by Alys Arden is the third book in the Casquette Girls series. This gorgeous book releases in November, 2018, which gives you plenty of time to catch up if you haven't read the first two books in the series.

THE CASQUETTE GIRLS is the first book and you can find my review HERE. Book 2 is THE ROMEO CATCHERS and you can find my review HERE. I love love love this series and am dying to read THE CITIES OF DEAD. This cover just makes me want it even more. Look at it! Squee! Is it November yet?

Love New Orleans? Read this series. For real, this is the best NOLA based read. It gets everything right. Yes I loved Interview with a Vampire, when I was in my teens. This is my new favorite!

THE CITY OF LOST FORTUNES by Bryan Camp

The City of Lost Fortunes

So many stories are set in New Orleans where the author has never lived in the city (sometimes never even visited) and I'm always nervous picking up a book set here because it's so rare that an author gets it right.
Bryan Camp definitely got it right. New Orleans is its own character in this story and I love how she's portrayed. Fully fleshed. Nuanced. Full of the culture and ambiance that is New Orleans.
I found the pacing a bit slow at times but I really enjoyed Jude's story. It's a new take on the different mythologies and I like the way it leaves room at the table for everyone. There were twists and turns that I didn't see coming and Jude's kind of an asshole, but in a likable way, which is always a plus.

The mystery aspect was very well done and there was just enough humor stirred into the mix. I wanted a little less narrative distance overall, I think that would have helped the pacing in some spots, but a fun read and a great New Orleans fantasy. Can't wait to read what comes next.

THE SMOKE THIEVES by Sally Green

The Smoke Thieves (The Smoke Thieves #1)

If this was Tash's story I might've been able to get on board. I liked her. She's feisty and she likes boots. What's not to like? The first chapter hooked me but then the POV switched and switched and switched. To get to the good parts I kept getting forced to read page after page of Catherine pining over Ambrose and Ambrose pining over Catherine, to the point where everything just felt repetitive. There was so much fluff in the middle that I found myself not caring about anything that happened.
In the end, this one wasn't for me.

THE COLDEST GIRL IN COLDTOWN by Holly Black

The Coldest Girl in Coldtown

Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown's gates, you can never leave.

One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.

What I thought

So I finished this book, screamed when I realized it's a standalone, and then started reading it again from the beginning. There. That's my review. I mean, really, if I just keep starting over again and again and again, then it won't ever end, right? Right.

I need more Tana.

More.

More.

More.
I love this book. So much. And it's obviously broken my ability to form coherent sentences. I didn't find out how amazing Holly Black's writing was until Cruel Prince hooked me with its sneaky pre-order promo. I mean, who can resist a cool enamel pin when it comes with a shiny new book.

Not me.

And I kept hearing good things so I dropped everything and read it. See review here (Warning it contains much babbling). And then, then, I read Tithe, Valiant, & Ironside because how could I not. See review here

And now THE COLDEST GIRL IN COLDTOWN has undone me. I'm caught in an endless loop. Someone send help. (Not really, I don't want to be saved... unless unless Holly wants to write me (just me) book 2 and then maybe I'll share.) Mwahahahahahahah.

Alright I'll stop.

Just buy this book.

Rating: ***** (5 stars doesn't feel like enough)

THE TETHERED MAGE by Melissa Caruso

The Tethered Mage (Swords and Fire #1)

I started this book during the terrible reading slump of Winter, 2017. I couldn't get into it, but I figured it was the slump's fault, so I set it aside. Fast-forward to Spring, 2018 and I'm so glad I picked this back up because I really enjoyed it.
I loved the beginning. Lots of action and the world-building was well done. There is a lot to this new world but it was deftly woven into the story. I adored Amalia's character. Zaira, I was less crazy about. In her defense, she was there against her will, so her angst was justifiable, but she came off sort of like Max from Two Broke Girls, except not funny. I would have liked a lot more levity there to break up the tension. I did, however, find her growing on me by the end of the book, so, shrugs, I guess I'll forgive her.
There is romance, but it's not the main focus. Act II felt slow to me, which is why I initially put this down. I think it could've been maybe a hundred pages lighter and not suffered at all. I like big books, like a lot, but some of the scenes felt like they weren't pulling their weight to move the plot forward. Also, some of Amalia's actions had me shaking my head a little, and the ensuing action that followed those questionable decisions felt too contrived as a result.
That said, the intrigue and espionage of this story was really good. I love that it kept me guessing. Sometimes the villains felt a little over-the-top. For all the talk of how ruthless the Empire is, one of the bad guys (no spoilers) sure got away with a lot, and I kept wondering how this person was still alive, but I enjoyed how the story played out and I'm excited for the next one. I want more romance and I think I'm going to enjoy Zaira (and her love life) even more in THE DEFIANT HEIR. ;)

Happy Reading,
Chelly

SONG OF BLOOD AND STONE by L. Penelope

Song of Blood & Stone (Earthsinger Chronicles #1)

The cover is gorgeous and I guess I'm shallow because that's why I jumped at the chance to review this book.  The blurb was compelling too. But, yeah, that cover. As far as the story goes, there were things I loved, and things I was less crazy about.
I loved Jasminda's character. And I loved Jack's character, but I wasn't so excited about their POVs. Which probably doesn't make sense, but... but... but... Okay, so most of this story is told in close 3rd person from Jasminda and Jack's POVs, but I felt like I was still too far away from the narrative. There's another POV here (no spoilers) told in 1st person, and those were my favorite parts of this book. Personally, I think the entire story could have been told better in 1st person. But that's just one opinion.
The pacing had some issues too. The beginning was action-packed and then the story slowed down. A lot. It seemed like the "action" in the middle of the book was just for the sake of something happening as it didn't really move the plot forward. And Jasminda is the "chosen one." She's the only person who can do all these important things, and, sure, that's a common trope and I'm usually on-board with it, but then it was never explained.
The action picked up a lot toward the end, which I liked, but the scenes didn't feel very developed to me. Instead of being immersed in the story, I felt like I was being told what happened.
My favorite parts of this book were the chapter openings, the parts told in 1st person, and the developing romance. I LOVED how the relationship was allowed to build slowly. No insta-love. Yay. I really liked the steamier scenes too.  Not sure if this is a stand-alone, but I'd read more to see where this story goes.

RISEN by Cole Gibsen

Risen (Blood Eternal #1)

The pace was super-fast, which is always a plus for me, and I kept turning pages. But something was missing for me. I liked Charlie well-enough. I liked Sebastian. But the story itself fell a little flat. The dialog was a little too on-the-nose. The characters connections felt sort of rushed.

There were some really great moments that totally sucked me in, and I read this in a single day, so it definitely wasn't boring. I guess I wanted Charlie to have more agency in her own story. There were a few elements that made the story feel too predictable for me, but overall a good, fast read.

If you love vampires and action and romance with a sprinkling of blood, then
this one might be for you. It does end with a bit of a cliffhanger. But I'd definitely give the next book in the series a try.
